I prefer to manage social networks individually so I can tweak the post to grab the attention of the various personalities attracted to each.  I also like to avoid confusing social media cross-over, such as #hashtags in a Facebook post. I feel it’s good for my marketing mind to keep in touch with each network and the individuals in my target market.

Most top brands, however, prefer to use an automated Social Media Management System (SMMS) for popular social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.  Many of them use more than one Social Media Management tool, presumably for the various features each excels in.  Using an SMMS can be a practical option, especially if a company has numerous accounts within each network.  Social Media Management Systems also offer a suite of tools to better track and analyze activity and information across these networks (which is primarily what I use them for).

The inquisitive minds at Pingdom decided to have a look at the Twitter accounts of Interbrand’s global top 100 brands to determine which SMMS is the most popular.  They examined the tools used by the 96 brands who had a presence on Twitter.

The results show Canada’s HootSuite leading the pack of top brands at 20.8% (almost a third).  TweetDeck follows at 16.7%.  Trailing at less than 10 accounts are SocialEngage, Vitrue, SocialFlow and Sprinklr.  Sprout Social, Spredfast, Context Optional Social Marketing Suite, Seesmic, Involver, Astute Social, Buddy Media Suite, SocialOomph, Socialware, Crowdbooster, and Twitterfeed are used by less than three of the top brands studied.

We greatly appreciate Pingdom’s research and the sharing of their raw data via Google Docs.  The document includes links to the social media management systems as well as each brand’s Twitter account ID.

Does HootSuite’s popularity hold up outside of the top 96 brands?  The below infographic provides a snapshot of their overall popularity.

I’m not surprised, it’s a well designed platform that serves the needs of pretty much any business. They’re brilliant in subtle upselling too.
