The definition of web copywriting has grown from sales copy & product descriptions to include all digital communication to one degree or another. From social media to your blog, everything you write online will utilize some level of copywriting skills.
Because of that, writing engaging web copy using words that are proven to sell online has become an art form as much as a tactic. Sure, there were collections of words that sell long before the Internet arrived. Sales legend, Elmer Wheeler, was a huge advocate of using words and sentences that sell way back in the 30’s. But the copywriting game has evolved with technology’s impact on the social dynamic.
While the power of words hasn’t changed, the road to making a sale has. Today’s online marketers know that to make a sale, we have to engage consumers. We no longer sell to people, rationalize, or try to directly persuade them, we intrigue, entice and invite them to buy. Even referrals and recommendations have changed, with everyone having the ability to widely broadcast their experience and become an influential authority.
Those same people will often promote businesses inadvertently as they strive to be recognized as an authority on any given topic. That’s why we must provide exceptional content to compliment and support our marketing campaigns. Nobody wants to share “10 reasons to buy our software”, but they’ll eagerly share “10 things you can do today to be an online rock star tomorrow”.
Of all the benefits of blogging, offering truly helpful, engaging content is the most important. It is the only way you’ll grab the attention of consumers who are drowning in information. Your blog is an open gateway to your products or services. You can bring the sale home by using engaging words that sell within your content, like you do in other online marketing.
No matter what your business is, engaging web copy and content are the most important factors in online success.
“There is virtually no other skill that can make you as much money as copywriting,” writes Ray Edwards in his book, How to Write Copy That Sells. “Nearly all Internet millionaires know this secret: more than their product, more than their traffic-generation techniques, more than their email campaigns, more than who their joint-venture partners might be, it’s their copywriting that has made them rich. The wealth secret of nearly all businesses, and especially internet-based businesses, is the secret of great copywriting.”
Writing engaging web copy and content requires you to tap into your target market’s needs, wants, and emotions. Online consumers need to feel that you are talking directly to them and relate to what you’re saying. They want you to solve their problems, motivate, inspire, comfort and validate them.

I’m going to hav lots of fun with these too! Thanks so much!
Great choices, they really work too. About 10 years ago I was learning copywriting for a company I worked for and I wasn’t getting anywhere. I discovered a list of selling words and honestly I couldn’t believe the difference it made. Humans absolutely respond to the right words.
I got through half the list before I saw it…the engagement part that is. It’s eye opening really or maybe its just me. Brilliant peek into the psychological side of social sales.
I like this. Lots of choices but still manageable. I once bought an ebook with regular words that sell and there were over 3000! I ended up going through them and making a shorter list of 300 or so really good ones. Lots of words help to make the sale but some are exceptionally effective like yours. Kudos!
You’ve inspired my creative mind! I’ve been coming up with new ad’s and placing these words in existing blog posts. Thank you so much!
I agree it’s all about engagement these days and the words that sell have changed. Advertising still hasn’t clued in that they can’t talk AT people anymore. It just doesn’t work.
That’s where Canadian small businnesses can really shine and they already do because they’re in touch with their customers and value each one.
Thanks for this looooooooooong list of marketing words. I’m going to do some experimenting with them for sure. When I think of words that sell I’ve always thought about ads only but you’ve got some great ideas for other applications there.
