Canadian Online Shopping for Father’s Day (Statistics)

The 2013 Bank of Montreal Father’s Day Survey and the Father’s Day Trend Survey conducted by Research Management Group for Walmart, focused on Father’s Day in Canada.  The results are applicable to both online and offline retailers.  The Father’s Day Trend Survey specifically included online shopping.

The Father’s Day Trend Survey of 736 shoppers found that close to a third would purchase something for Dad online this year. The average amount to be spent on gifts was estimated at $140.

The most popular Father’s Day gift items included several that could easily be served up online:Canadian Online Shopping Statistics for Father's Day

  • Clothing or footwear (39%)
  • Father’s Day Cards (30%)
  • Tools or hardware (26%)
  • Gift cards (22%)

Since you can easily purchase these items offline, eCommerce merchants may want to feature unique or novelty items while slashing prices for more common Father’s Day gift ideas. It’s a great time for free or reduced shipping as well. Gifts that can be shipped for less will be popular choices too, such as novelty t-shirts or neckties that can be shipped in an envelope.

The BMO 2013 Father’s Day Survey of 1000 Canadians indicated they will spend an average of $95 on dads this year (up 10% from 2012), which seems more realistic than the above-mentioned Walmart survey.

Provincial spending averages for Father’s Day:

  • Albertans will spend the most, at $116
  • British Columbians planned to spend $101
  • Both Ontario and Quebec will spend an estimated $94
  • People in the Prairies will spend about $86
  • Atlantic Canada plans to spend a frugal $61

The perfect last minute item for any occasion is an e-mailed gift card. Several years ago, I designed a series of holiday-theme gift card images for a company offering e-mailed gift cards. They simply sent the recipient the gift card image with a code to be entered online at check-out. The sender could choose to send the card immediately or on a specific date. Since the entire process is automated and instantaneous, the seriously late shoppers can have a major impact on your holiday sales.

I think the Walmart spending is on the high side too. Great stats though.

I’d suggest Walmart is trying to make people think they should spend more on fathers day. I put more faith in the BMO numbers.
